Text Box: Well, you would have heard of him. You might even have seen some of his work. But, if you say, “What does it matter? He means nothing to us”, then I have something which might surprise you. Shakespeare still effects the world today in starkly obvious and equally subtle ways. Modern movies such as “Ten things I hate about you”, “She’s the man” and many others are just appropriations of Shakespeare’s original work. Many expressions such as “green eyed jealousy, dead as a doornail, foul play and many other idioms of modern English (see this site)  come from this enigmatic playwright. But there’s more, much more depending on how deep you look. Many people believe that Shakespeare was the “inventor of the modern world”—through his plays and his plays only  (up until that period), he communicated the revolutionary idea that humans, by self reflection, have the ability to change their personalities, for better or worse. Now, this may not seem too huge a leap of faith for the modern world—this just shows how much effect Shakespeare had!  In this time, self reflection was a radical idea, previously only spoken off in hushed whispers in dark alleys— and in Shakespeare’s time with strict social boundaries this was punished severely.
